Protective Gimbel Glove
Gimbel Glove provides protection
Working around sharp objects and deadly diseases is an everyday hazard for medical professionals. Needle sticks and puncture wounds from sharp instruments are always just a slip or bump away.
That ever-present concern is what led Neal Gimbel, an orthopedic surgeon in Phoenix, to spend more than 10 years developing and perfecting a specialized glove for protection.
Like most surgeons, Gimbel has been stuck before and said it's a significant concern among medical professionals.
"There's quite a bit of apprehension if you're stuck," he said. "And it's a concern for doctors or nurses and their families."
If surgical utensils or needles are used on an infected patient, they can be carriers of the deadly HIV or hepatitis viruses. During the past decade, more than 60,000 medical professionals nationwide have been infected through accidental punctures that occurred during medical procedures, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Gimbel's invention, the Gimbel Glove, is an FDA-approved puncture-resistant latex glove with protective pads on the fingertips and thumb. The pads are made from polymer material and a patented bonding and layering process. Gimbel, who also has marketed specialized gloves for law enforcement agencies, said the new gloves retain most of the flexibility and sensitivity required in surgery and other medical procedures.
Currently, most medical professionals wear several gloves, a technique called "double-gloving," to protect themselves.
"These (Gimbel) gloves offer 1,000 times more protection over double- or triple-gloving with latex," said Craig Maron, president of Gimbel Glove.
Saul Schreiber, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in Phoenix, has been using the gloves for a few weeks.
"In the few times that I have used them, I have not been stuck," he said. "It gives you a sense of security and comfort. If there is a stick, you feel protected."
